"A Tuff Situation"
Alpine, Texas

Hardened volcanic ash, known as tuff, forms a "lunar-like" landscape along the Ross Maxwell Scenic Drive just to the north of Castolon, in the park's southeastern section. Photo taken in the summer of 2003.

"Butte Tee Full"
Big Bend National Park, Texas

Looking out to the east from Castolon affords this gorgeous view of the desert along the Rio Grande flood plain. Photo taken in the summer of 2005.

"Mule's Ears Vista"
Big Bend National Park, Texas

A pair of purple pricklypear cactus add a touch of off-color to this typical desert scene. Mule's Ears Peaks can be seen in the farground. Photo taken in the fall of 2004.

"Cerro in Sepia"
Big Bend National Park, Texas

Tuff formations surround the prominent Cerro Castellan Peak, a landmark used by Mescalero Apaches to find their way home from frequent raids into Mexico. Photo taken in the fall of 2004.

"Standing in the Shadows"
Big Bend National Park, Texas

A sparsely covered thatch roof provides a cool retreat from the desert heat at the ranger station at Castolon. Santa Elena Canyon can be seen in the distance. Photo taken in the fall of 2004.
